ABOUT THE BREED
The Bullmastiff.....a gentle GIANT!!!
The history of the Bullmastiff began in the 1860's when poaching on the large estates and game preserves of England was rampant. The breed was originally dubbed the "Game keeper's Nite Dog". This giant-size protector was more than a watch dog bred to sound the alarm. He would listen carefuly, then at the right moment with a burst of speed spring through the forest after the poacher, pin the poacher to the ground and hold him there without mauling him till the game keeper arrived on the scene.
Bullmastiffs are 60% mastiff and 40% bulldog. They were "faithful and fearless, but not ferocious". This "Gamekeeper's Night Dog" has made him a perfect pet and guard dog to have around the house. The personality of a Bullmastiff is that of a low-key, quiet, affectionate and confident dog. He is usually dosile with little ones but his size is large and intimidating. He can be very stubborn because he was bred to work independently from his handler and thus tends to think for himself.
Early training is extremely important and should begin at 8 weeks of age. They should be taken to obedience classes to learn how to socialize with other dogs. The Bullmastiff requires moderate but not excessive exercise. A walk around the block twice is sufficient for an adult dog. Since he is a fast-growing breed, too much exercise as a puppy, is not recomended. Bullmastiffs are intellegent, loyal, obedient and courageous. He builds a strong band of devotion with it's family. Bullmastiffs are highley protective of their family against any percieved threats, but they are much more likely to bow over strangers than attack which makes them desireable as guard dogs. |
